Nix-shell -p jetbrains.goland + remote-dev-server.sh run. Here are the configurations I tested (assume non-root user is mc, and omitted $(dirname $(which goland))/./goland-2021.3.2/bin for brevity ): Command I have tried sudo -E and moving environment variables in various combinations, but none of them works (client refuses to connect). We all know sudo does not play well with nix, hence if we run sudo, we will lose all the $PATH info and enter the IDE as root. However, the in the ~/.cache/JetBrains/RemoteDev-/ has JBR (among other things) symbolically linked to /nix/store (multiple times, once for each project) and this will require sudo execution to move or delete (which are part of the launcher.sh files). Goland (and CLion and others) DO have JBR (in the nix packages). The symlink will fail and the scripts will not run. Idea Ultimate has no JBR bundled (it's as quoted, the -no-jbr- URL). It then uses this symlink-ed path as an environment variable to launch the IDE headlessly. Launcher.sh navigates manually relative to the binary ( idea-ultimate or goland, whichever the case is) to locate the JBR (which is JetBrain's JRE/JDK fork) and creates a symbolic link the your home folder under ~/.cache/Jetbrains/RemoteDev- as something they term as JBR (JetBrain Runtime, I assume). The culprit is mainly within the launcher.sh file. sh which launches a Java process headless with new configurations. Remote-dev-sever.sh calls launcher.sh which calls. If (-not (Get-Command choco. After much investigation, the bash scripts process goes likes this:
